NUBI SW FW.png

Oh, hi!

I'm Nubi.

A little about what makes me Nubi

I come from a family and cultural background that placed a strong emphasis on academics and faith. This meant there were lots of rules, limitations, and high expectations. I often felt uncomfortable and unnatural in those spaces, which caused quite a bit of internal and external conflict.

I experienced childhood trauma that I’m still healing from today. It changed the way I related to the world, and it wrecked friendships and relationships. When I wasn’t being bullied, I didn’t exist at all. I don’t even have a senior picture in my high school yearbook because I wanted to be invisible and disappear altogether.

But I persisted. I went to school, partied, explored the world, got jobs, survived terrible romantic encounters, and indulged in different ways to numb out. I spent decades (I started working as a newborn, obviously) in corporate environments for both small and massive companies—working as an individual contributor, a manager, and a leader.

I learned a lot in those places, but it wasn’t always smooth. I never felt like myself in those rigid spaces, and my values certainly never aligned with those organizations.

The Shift

I lived in a complete trance.  I had no idea how deeply that early trauma affected me until years later, when my body had a total breakdown. That was the turning point where I started to seek help and find different ways to heal. I have been through some heavy stuff, and I am incredibly grateful to be here to keep working through it.

The end.

Ok, I know that seems abrupt, but experiences and trauma are different for everyone.  There is no benefit to comparing trauma.

My Favorite Things

My absolute favorite thing to do is laugh, especially when I laugh so hard I start to wheeze. (I don’t like laughing because I’m being tickled, though. That feels too out of control.)

Some of my other favorite things:

  • Sound: Music and the pure ability to hear.

  • Sight: I love to see. Color, glitter, fireworks, textures (pom-poms!), and smiles.

  • The Underdog: I generally dislike competition because I don’t want anyone to lose. But if I have to choose, I’ll always root for the underdog.

Where I Am Today

I grew up as someone who never thought she deserved love, much less a family. Today, I’m a parent and a partner. I’m here because I survived, and I keep trying to figure it out for myself every single day.

I know we’re here on Earth, and I don’t know exactly why. But while we are, I am deeply grateful for my favorite things—laughing, music, glitter, and my family. My goal now is to help others sense, discover, and embrace what their favorite things are, too.
